More than one million meals donated to food rescue organization OzHarvest

Every month, Gate Gourmet helps Virgin Australia donate over 8,000 kilos of food (16,000 meals) to Australians in need. In May 2018, Virgin reached an incredible one million meals donated since the beginning of its partnership with food rescue organization OzHarvest.

OzHarvest has been collecting Virgin’s surplus food from Gate Gourmet Australia units since 2015, demonstrating a major step forward in finding sustainable ways for the airline to reuse its surplus food supplies. OzHarvest rescues over 8,000 kilos of quality food direct from Virgin Australia each month distributing to schools in vulnerable communities. Over 333,000 kilograms of food has been saved from landfill since the program started.

Virgin Australia General Manager of Group Sustainability, Rob Wood, said the partnership demonstrates Virgin Australia’s commitment to implementing sustainable business operations. ”It’s fantastic when our airline is able to help address the pressing issue of hunger and poverty in our community while also improving the way that our business operates and reducing our waste streams. The airline’s cabin crews, catering partner Gate Gourmet and OzHarvest’s volunteers played key roles in making sure the food is delivered safely each day.”
